A really normal concern we have as parents is shielding or protecting our children from our own stress and pressure. So maybe that stress or pressure comes from experiencing divorce or losing a job or getting a challenging medical diagnosis. The most important thing for us to do is to be developmentally appropriately vulnerable for our children, to allow our children to see the full range of human experience that we're experiencing as parents to they might understand that life is about ups and downs and peaks and valleys. So when they engage it at their own level as children and in the future as adults, they'll know that these challenges are normal. They're what typical, every day people experience. So in the moment though these situations seem tragic or impossible for us to engage or impossible for us to parent in those moments, when we have that satellite view, we know that this is life. And that's what we want to communicate to our kids. This is life. And in fact, in life they are safe and loved even though we might be experiencing this hard patch.
