How can we help fathers become more involved? I don't know a lot of fathers that don't want to be good fathers and involved in their kids' life. However, fathers experience different obstacles. Some are are internal and some are external that sometimes makes it more difficult to be an involved father. For example, usually fathers are socialized as men and don't have a lot of good role models of how to be nurturing and how to be emotional with their friends and family. They may need some help with that. The first thing we want to help fathers do is to learn how to ask for help and to learn how to ask for support. Also, sometimes in our society, there are some stigmas about fathers being involved. We don't have as many rules that help us after the birth of a child, to help us get a leave of absence with pay. We don't have as many programs to help us that are oriented towards the father. So I think in our society, it's really important to help fathers as well. On of the most important things is for the father and the partner to communicate about how the partner can help in support of the father. Allow the father to be involved in their own way and use their own strengths with their children. Allow the father some space and control to be the best father they can be without criticizing or feeling left out.
