We employ a number of different strategies to feed our family for $40 to $60 a week. One of the biggest ones is that we have a set grocery budget and we shop with cash. We take the money out of the bank once a month and we put that in an envelope. And that’s what we use for groceries when we go to the store. Secondly, I plan a menu and I do it based upon what I have on hand and what’s on sale at the store. Thirdly, we don’t eat a lot of processed foods. I make most of our foods from scratch. And you know, you might think, “Well, I don’t have a lot of time to do that.” Well, one thing that I do on the weekends – or on Fridays, if I have time – I’ll just take an hour and I’ll make up a bit batch of pancakes, or waffles or muffins or cookies and meat and sauces and marinades – just make up a bunch of stuff so that I will have it in the freezer. So then it’s really easy to pull together a meal. And then we aren’t tempted to go get carry out and we also don’t have to buy processed foods which typically are a lot more expensive. And then another thing that we do is we pair coupons with sales so that we get something when it’s at it’s rock bottom price and then I stock a coupon with it so that a lot of times we get it for free or almost free.
