There's a lot of challenges a couple faces after the loss of a child. You also often hear about families breaking up. And one of the reasons it's tough is that you're both going through this very hard, terrible thing and it's very hard to support your partner. There's an analogy of being you're both drowning in the sea, and when you're drowning, you don't grab onto the other person; you go your own separate way and try to save yourself. And you really need someone on shore who can reach out to grab you and pull you out. So per that analogy, maybe the best thing is to look for support from family, friends, not always your spouse; your spouse can give you support but often times they're going to need their own space. I think that's a key lesson there. And the other thing is that it's not all bad news. One of the good things that brings couples together, I think, after this is that they're the only people in the world, or the only person in the world is your spouse, who really understands what you've gone through; the loss of your child. Your spouse is really the only person that understands that. So you will have a bond, a new bond, that you haven't had before, and that can help families get through it. It's difficult, but you can definitely get through this.
