Taking the tragedy of my daughter's death and turning it into philanthropy has been a very healing experience for me. I remember that after she died, on of the many crazy things that flew into my mind was that no one would know her and no one would remember her. By creating a philanthropy in her name, Friends of Maddy, I know that she has a legacy that will touch and affect many people. It may have started out as a little bit of a selfish thing for me to make sure that she had this legacy, but it's ended up being so fulfilling knowing that we are helping families who are going through a very difficult time and knowing that they are going to hear the name "Maddy." It will be because of my daughter. It's been something positive for me to focus on, when I could have gotten into bed and never gotten out.
