Positive self-talk is that voice inside. That voice that we hear ourself say, and what we are saying about ourselves. We need to teach our children positive self-talk. They don't do it naturally. The way that we teach them is by us giving them positive feedback at a young age, giving them encouragement, and then modeling our own positive self-talk. The way to this is at night time when you are tucking your kids in. I may say, and this is contrary with what we are comfortable with in society, I may say, "You know what I really love about myself? I am a kind person. What do you love about yourself?" I did this every single night with my children. What happens is that they start doing it themselves. They have the voice that is telling them that they are strong, they are smart. When the chips fall and they don't win the basketball game or don't succeed in something, they now have that internal voice saying, "It's okay. I'm getting back up and I'm going to try again." It's really critical. At 8 years old, the external voice shuts off and they start listening to their internal voice and they need that skill.
