In responding to a child asking why their friend has a larger house, a pool, better clothes is to remember to put it in the context of your values and priorities. For example, “Yes, Hanna’s family has a nice pool, but pools cost a lot of money. We prefer to take more family vacations,” instead of answering just simply, “No, we can’t afford it,” which gives your child a negative view of their situation. You have to remember children pick up on your attitudes and feelings on things so if you show them that you are comfortable with your socio-economic status, if you are, they will be.
