People ask me because I'm a priest how does spirituality influence my parenting. And I would respond on every level. My spiritual practices are so central to who I am, so engaging in practices of prayer and service and focusing on narrative, in my experience the narrative of the Bible and communicating those practices of prayer as they are age-appropriate to my kids or mindfulness or cultivating practices of compassion have been central to my identity as a parent because they're central to my own identity as a man. So cultivating spiritual practices as a parent is really central to my experience as a priest. But what I would also say is if you're a parent without spiritual practices, it's very likely that you will not be successful cultivating spirituality in the life of your children. So you start with yourself first. We start with ourselves first as parents in almost every aspect, and we look at our lives and we take an assessment of where we sit spiritually, what our practices are, and how they inform the lives that we live. And then we seek to either deepen those practices. And then we seek to acknowledge them and then pass them on to our children.
