Common signs that would make you call the doctor would be; bleeding, contractions that don't go away with hydration, headaches that don't go away with simple treatments. I think you should feel comfortable calling your doctor no matter what, and your doctor is receptive to phone calls, but more serious things are things that don't go away. If you have contractions and you rest and they go away, you don't need to call your doctor. If you have bleeding and the bleeding stops after a very short period of time, you may need to check in with your doctor, but it doesn't need to be an emergency phone call. Anything that doesn't go away, warrants a phone call, more rapidly than not.
