It's important for you, as a parent, to make sure that any environment where your child is playing is safe. Now that you have your home child proofed, it's important to make sure that other areas where your child is playing is safe as well. Your child asks to go on a play date. It's up to you to talk to the mom or the dad and say, "I need to make sure that my child is safe in your home. I need to ask about guns. Do you have any in the home? If so, do you keep it under lock and key? Do you keep the ammunition separate?" You also need to ask, "Do you have a pool? Do you have a spa or jacuzzi? Is it locked? Is the lock in working order?" These are hard questions to ask, but the alternative is far more difficult. As a parent, it is your job to ask those difficult questions.
