Well, I think the best ways that you can help someone who’s in an abusive relationship is something my mother used to say, “There’s just power in the presence. There’s power in just being there and listening.” And so just being someone that someone can come and not be judged and not be told what to do is very important for someone who could be a victim of dating abuse. There are things that you can do and there are many instances in which just having a friend who was documenting bruises when they saw it, that was writing things on the calendar when they happened can be very powerful things that can help you when it comes to getting a protective order or possibly legal proceedings if it comes to that. So just because you can’t make the person leave, the safest way you can – and it might be not the right time – you can do something that can help them by being there, by keeping track of things that happen and also by referring them to places like Loveisrespect, the National Dating Abuse Helpline.
