What a parent needs to do when they suspect that their child is being bullied is to make sure that they document what is going on. This is one of the most important messages I give to clients every day. Parents experience their children being bullied, and it’s one of the most devastating things a parent can go through because it’s watching your little loved one suffer and feeling as though you’re powerless to stop it. Parents are often very nice people. Unfortunately in the legal system, niceness is not going to get you results. You have to be firm. You have to document the concerns that you have with the school. And one of the best ways to do that is email. Sometimes parents find that if they get a lawyer involved right away it sends a message that the parent is overly aggressive, high maintenance, or high demand. This tends to cause parents to think that they don’t want to take the next step of acting because they’re afraid of how they might be perceived. This is the wrong way to handle it. Parents need to be firm. They need to be firm in documenting what their children are going through. Schools are only held liable if there is a pattern of the school not taking action to correct a situation that they’re on notice of. It’s imperative that the parent take immediate action and notify the school in writing if they suspect their child is being bullied.
