So are there different kinds of acne and are they treated the same way? Absolutely. Acne in one patient may present with blackheads and whiteheads and in another patient they may have really tender red bumps that we refer to as cysts and even pus-filled spots. And as a dermatologist, it's my job to make sure we tailor the treatment to each individual type of acne. .For that patient with the clogged pores, oftentimes getting them on a gentle skincare regiment and using a topical cream like benzyl peroxide or a vitamin A cream like Retin-A will do a good job to unclog the pores. But for the patient who has more of those red, tender bumps and pus-filled legions, they'll often need medication by mouth prescribed by their dermatologist. There's a finally type of acne that we seen in women, particularly women as they get into their later teens and early 20s, and it's acne that follows the cycle of their menstrual cycle and those patients will need to address the hormonal fluctuations that are causing their acne.
