I find there are four primary reasons why parents don't really know what's going on in the lives of their children. Number one is that they're busy. They're joggling jobs and complicated relationships. And finances. And all kinds of things that get along with everyday life. And sometimes that means that they don't live enough time to spend with their children. Secondly, even if they are spending time with them, they're not always really listening to their children. They're distracted. And they are not cuing in on some of the things that their kids might be trying to tell them. The third reason is that many adults, many parents, assumes that their children adolescent is like their own adolescence, and they are struggling with the same things. Where, in fact, today's adolescence is very different then adolescence of yesteryear. I like to say, "This is not your grandfathers adolescence. Maybe not even your own adolescence." So, in order to close the reality gap, parents really need to dig deep to understand what kids are growing up with today. What environment they are growing up in today. And the forth reason is that some kids, not all kids, but some kids, work really hard to make sure that their parents don't know what's going on in their lives. Because they are trying to conceal risk behavior.
