I think a parent can help your child transition to college by maybe the summer before giving them a little bit more freedom than they had previously because they go away to college and you will not be watching. And also, having a plan for when they are going to get to come home and when you are going to talk to them. If it is they are coming at Thanksgiving, then they know that when they leave in September. If you are going to call them every Sunday, then that is the expectation that they will receive a call from you every Sunday. But then, you can be a watchful parent without being a hovering parent. So sometimes he calls me more than other times, and I sense that maybe he needs me more and so there will be follow up calls. Usually when things are okay, there are not a lot of phone calls. And you just have to accept that as much as you want to hear from them and know what is going on, you have to just take their cue.
