Your child is ready for a cell phone when you need your child to have a cell phone. If your child is only with adults that have access to a phone, there is no need for them to have one. However, if your child is going to be going off by themselves, either to the mall or spend a couple of hours alone without an adult, then yes, it is absolutely appropriate for them to have a cell phone. You want to start slowly. They don't need to have all the bells and whistles right away. If they have a simple phone that only calls you, that's where you need to start. They need to demonstrate that they are responsible, that they can take it with them and keep it charged at all times, and they always answer the phone when you, mom or dad, give them a call.
