Keeping kids safe online

You know, nowadays parents have to think about not only keeping their kids safe in the neighborhood but safe online. it's a big question and a lot depends on the child's age. But if you start early, when your children are young, 4-5, teaching them the rules of online safety and manners, it will be really helpful. So they'll know that they can't just go and use a new program without checking with you. They'll know that there are parental controls on the computer. There's a lot of great software out there that you can find. You also want to look at privacy settings, to think about who's seeing that information when you're posting your sonogram picture, or your child who's had their first birthday. Keeping children safe online is about connecting with them. It's about putting the computer in the living room, not in the bedroom. it's about engaging, having fun, finding things to do together online, and being willing to be the authority who can say no when you need to say no.
